Azerbaijan is experiencing a significant decline in car imports.

According to official statistics, in the first quarter of 2026, the number of imported passenger cars decreased by 7,587 units (36.2%) compared to the same period last year. Thus, the total import volume amounted to 13,359 vehicles.

As reported by BAKU.WS citing Xəzər TV, according to experts, both legislative changes and economic factors are behind these figures.

One of the key reasons is the ban on importing vehicles older than 10 years, as well as the abolition of tax incentives. At the same time, the decline in imports does not mean that there is a shortage in the automotive market.

Chairman of the Automobile Dealers Association of Azerbaijan Eyyub Aliyev noted that there is no cause for concern regarding the state of the country's vehicle fleet, as sufficient stocks have been built up in warehouses. According to him, the ongoing scrapping process will also stimulate demand for new cars. As old and environmentally unsafe vehicles are taken out of service, they will be replaced with new ones.

It should be recalled that in the first quarter of 2025, this figure was significantly higher, amounting to 20,946 vehicles.
