Today is the birthday of People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR Sara Gadimova.
The singer was born on May 31, 1922, in Baku.
The artist's ancestors were originally from the village of Abdalgulably in the Aghdam district.
A graduate of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory and the Baku Music School named after Asaf Zeynally, S. Gadimova began her career in 1941 as a soloist of the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic named after Muslim Magomayev.
Her mentors were outstanding mugham performers — Huseyngulu Sarabsky, Khan Shushansky, and Seyid Shushansky.
Thanks to her unique talents, she gained recognition as a singer in a short time and won the love of the public. The song dedicated to the heroic Azerbaijani woman, Şəfqət bacısı ("Sister of Mercy"), written by the outstanding Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli to the verses of Samad Vurgun, gained particular popularity.
Sara Gadimova, who performed leading roles at the Azerbaijan Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, created vivid and memorable portrayals of Leyli and Asli.
The mughams "Bayati-Shiraz," "Gatar," "Shur," "Shahnaz," "Mahur-Hindi," "Kharij Segah," as well as folk songs masterfully performed by her, have become part of the golden fund of Azerbaijan's musical art.
"Garabagh shikestesi" in S. Gadimova's interpretation holds a special place in the history of Azerbaijani music. The singer, possessing deep knowledge of the subtleties of folk music, enriched the national musical treasury with her distinctive performance style.
The ability to penetrate the inner world of the listener and exert a strong emotional impact on them is a hallmark of Sara Gadimova's artistry.
A female khanende who repeatedly and with great success represented Azerbaijan's national culture on the most prestigious stages abroad, she managed to attract the interest and admiration of people of various nationalities toward Azerbaijani folk music.
Sara Gadimova passed away on May 12, 2005, in Baku.
