The Personal Tragedy of Shafiqa Akhundova, to Whom Samed Vurgun Dedicated the Poem "Aygun"

A new episode of the Retro Baku program on the Baku TV channel is dedicated to the life and work of the first female composer in the East to write an opera, People's Artist of Azerbaijan Shafiga Akhundova.

In the program, singer and composer Arif Salimov shared his memories of her.

According to him, Shafiga Akhundova told him that Samad Vurgun's poem "Aygun" was dedicated specifically to her. She admitted that she did not want her family to fall apart and to be left alone with a child in her arms, but fate turned out differently.

A. Salimov also touched upon the topic of a deep personal tragedy related to the composer's only son. The artist heard her praying to the Almighty to take her son Taleh from this life before her.

In turn, People's Artist Guiyanag Mamedova spoke about the most severe trials that befell Shafiga Akhundova. According to the singer, no matter how many lullabies Shafiga khanum sang to her son, he never became happy. For this reason, her son remained her deepest emotional wound. G. Mamedova added that only those close to her saw Shafiga khanum's tears: in the presence of others, she always remained strong and never cried.
