Tsunami threat declared in Kamchatka after strong earthquake

Another earthquake occurred in Kamchatka, with a magnitude of 7.2. A tsunami warning has been issued in the region, with waves expected to reach 1.5 meters in some areas. This was reported by the Governor of Kamchatka Territory Vladimir Solodov in his Telegram channel. Note that the last earthquake occurred on September 13, with a magnitude of 7.7.

Meteorologists from the United States also warned about the threat of a tsunami in the Kuril Islands following the earthquake.

"This morning is once again testing the resilience of Kamchatka residents. Immediately after the earthquake, we are beginning to promptly inspect social institutions and residential buildings. [...] A tsunami threat has been declared. According to updated data, the earthquake magnitude was 7.2," the message states. According to Solodov, emergency services have been put on high alert. No information about damage has been received yet.

Footage taken by eyewitnesses has already appeared in local Telegram channels. The videos show light fixtures and furniture items swaying heavily. At the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky airport, information displays began swaying from side to side due to the earthquake.

Last Saturday, after the earthquake, Kamchatka authorities again declared a tsunami threat. The regional Ministry of Emergency Situations warned about possible tsunami waves approaching the peninsula's coast, with the greatest height expected in the area of Cape Mayachny and Khalaktyrsky Beach - up to 120 centimeters. The US Geological Survey estimated the magnitude at 7.4. According to their data, the earthquake occurred 111 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with the epicenter at a depth of 39.5 kilometers.

Recall that on the night of July 30, the strongest earthquake since 1952 occurred in the Kamchatka Territory. According to various estimates, its magnitude was 8.7. The exact number of victims was not reported. After the main earthquake, there were 30 more noticeable aftershocks with an intensity of 2-5 points. Following this, four tsunami waves hit Severo-Kurilsk in the Sakhalin region - the height of the waves exceeded 3 meters. Due to the tsunami threat, authorities in Japan, the USA, Canada, and other countries on the coast south of New Zealand evacuated residents.
