Pentagon officially notified the EU about the termination of military support
The United States intends to cease military support for European Union countries until the next fiscal year.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to RIA Novosti, this was announced by the Director of Defense Policy of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, Vaidotas Urbelis.
"Last week, the US Department of Defense officially informed countries that from next year, from the next fiscal year, this line will be zeroed out for all European countries," said Urbelis.
According to him, Lithuania specifically has not yet received a letter from the United States about the termination of support. In addition, the cancellation of aid is not related to the presence of American soldiers in Europe and does not indicate their imminent withdrawal, added the ministry representative.
The day before, the Financial Times, citing sources, reported that the United States intends to gradually phase out military aid programs for Eastern European countries bordering Russia. In this way, Washington wants to push the countries of the continent to invest more in their own defense. The recipients of these funds were previously mainly Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
In Europe, this step was met with concern, and they are now trying to get additional clarification from the United States.
