French anesthesiologist Frederic Pechier accused of poisoning 30 patients to take revenge on colleagues. This is reported by the BBC.
The 53-year-old doctor came under investigation in 2017. He was accused of poisoning patients in two clinics between 2008 and 2017. It is believed that due to the doctor's actions, 12 patients were unable to survive after surgery.
Charges were brought against the anesthesiologist after 36-year-old Sandra Simard's heart stopped during spinal surgery. With the help of an injection given by Pechier, the young woman was put into an artificial coma, which helped save her. The woman was in good health, but blood tests showed that the concentration of potassium in her blood was a hundred times higher than normal, which raised suspicions among investigators.
The investigation revealed 30 cases of unexpected cardiac arrest in patients after injections administered by Pechier. In 12 cases, resuscitation was unsuccessful. The substances that caused cardiac arrest varied - patients faced the administration of excessive amounts of lidocaine, paracetamol, and other substances dangerous in overdose.
The trial will continue until December, and since 2017, when the process began, Pechier has remained free under police supervision. He denies all accusations. Exactly why, according to the investigation, the doctor tried to take revenge on his colleagues is not specified. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment.
