The term of preliminary investigation in the criminal case of Lieutenant Colonel Gahraman Mamedov, detained while transporting 70 kg of gold bars from Istanbul airport in Turkey to one of the hotels, has been extended due to the scale of the investigation.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Qafqazinfo, the Main Investigation Department of the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan appealed to the court with a request to extend the detention period for additional investigative activities.

The court granted the request, taking into account the volume of procedural actions carried out within the framework of mutual legal assistance with Turkish law enforcement agencies, as well as the need to establish additional circumstances in the case. As a result, G. Mamedov's detention period has been extended for another three months.

It should be noted that Gahraman Mamedov previously held the position of senior assistant to the military attaché of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan in the USA. When leaving Istanbul airport, 70 kg of gold bars worth 10,220,900 manats were found and seized from him. During the investigation, it was established that the gold was smuggled through several countries.

In this regard, G. Mamedov was arrested as part of a criminal case initiated by the SSS. He is charged with smuggling and abuse of official powers.
