A supplement that improves the condition of skin and hair has been named
Scientists have concluded that collagen peptides may have a positive effect on the condition of skin, hair, and nails, as well as promote faster tissue recovery after damage. However, experts note that additional research is needed to draw definitive conclusions.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to the journal Nutrients, this conclusion was reached by the authors of a review of clinical studies on the effects of collagen supplements on the human body.
According to foreign experts, collagen is one of the main skin proteins that provides its firmness, density, and ability to retain moisture. With age, its natural production decreases, leading to dryness, reduced elasticity, and wrinkle formation. An analysis of scientific data showed that taking collagen peptides may improve skin hydration, increase its firmness, and reduce the severity of age-related changes.
Researchers also found that the most pronounced effect was observed with the use of low-molecular-weight peptides containing hydroxyproline. Such compounds are better absorbed by the body and may stimulate skin renewal processes, fibroblast activity, and the synthesis of important extracellular matrix components. At the same time, according to the scientists, the key factor is not the origin of the collagen but the composition and size of its peptides.
In addition, individual studies showed a potential benefit of collagen supplements for strengthening hair and nails. In particular, experts noted an increase in hair thickness, accelerated nail growth, and reduced nail brittleness. There is also evidence that collagen peptides can support tissue healing processes in cases of burns, pressure ulcers, and other skin damage.
At the same time, the review authors emphasize that the available evidence cannot yet be considered exhaustive. Many clinical studies were conducted on small groups of participants, were of short duration, or evaluated the effects of complex supplements containing several active ingredients at once.
