The reason for the shameful start of the Azerbaijan national football team under Fernando Santos in the World Cup qualifying match has been revealed.

According to sportinfo.az, the players who traveled to the away match with Iceland (5:0) told AFFA representatives that the Portuguese specialist kept them in complete confusion with his contradictory instructions.

Federation officials investigating the causes of the heavy defeat found that the head coach, while analyzing the opponent, initially instructed the team to move out of defense with the ball and build quick attacks through the center of midfield.

However, just a few minutes after the start of the match, he radically changed tactics.

Santos suddenly gave instructions not to keep the ball in defense, but only to kick it forward, demanding to fight for aerial balls in the third zone.

During the halftime break, the former head coach insisted on the need to focus even more on defense.

Despite the fact that the team finished the first half with a minimal deficit (1:0), Santos did not allow the players to attack actively.
