Why is the number of divorces increasing in Azerbaijan?

In Azerbaijan, as in many other countries, there is an increase in the number of divorces. This is associated with several social, economic, and cultural factors:

Changes in social norms. Previously, divorces in Azerbaijani society were condemned, and families tried to preserve marriage even in difficult situations. However, with increasing urbanization and the influence of Western values, attitudes toward divorce have become more tolerant.

Economic factors. Financial independence of women – more and more women are getting education and jobs, which reduces their dependence on husbands and allows them to decide on divorce in case of problems. Material difficulties – high expenses can intensify conflicts in the family.

Increased expectations from marriage. The younger generation is more focused on personal happiness and emotional satisfaction in marriage. If relationships don't meet expectations, people more often decide to divorce rather than endure for the sake of traditions.

Legal simplification of the procedure. Previously, divorce was a complex and lengthy process, but now it has become easier to formalize, especially with mutual consent.

Increase in the number of early marriages and their instability. Some couples get married under family pressure or hastily, without getting to know each other. Such unions often break up in the first years.

Influence of social networks and changes in communication. Access to the internet and social networks can provoke conflicts (jealousy, infidelity) or create the illusion that "there's a better option somewhere."

Migration and urbanization. Moving to cities or abroad changes lifestyle, values, and often leads to discord in families, especially if one of the spouses cannot adapt.

The increase in the number of divorces in Azerbaijan is a consequence of global social changes. On one hand, it reflects an increase in freedom of choice; on the other hand, it indicates problems in the institution of family that require attention from society and the state.
