ATTENTION citizens! Everyday drinks that can cause cancer
In the height of the summer season, when the sun's rays are particularly aggressive, bottled water and beverages displayed for sale in front of stores become a subject of serious public concern.
A video was sent to the BAKU.WS "hotline" that was filmed at one of the kiosks in Baku. The footage clearly demonstrates how water and various carbonated drinks are stored under direct sunlight.
Experts warn that such practice may pose a serious threat to consumers' health. When exposed to high temperatures, plastic packaging can release harmful substances into the contents.
Asim Veliyev, a food safety specialist, emphasized in his comment to BAKU.WS that beverages in plastic containers should categorically not be exposed to sunlight:
"Chemical substances contained in plastic containers penetrate into the water when exposed to sunlight. Regular consumption of such water leads to a number of health problems. Numerous studies show an increased risk of developing oncological diseases, liver and kidney damage, as well as reproductive disorders.
This is why safety standards strictly require that these products not be stored under the influence of sunlight. Beverages in plastic packaging should be stored in a dry, shaded place at a temperature of 15-25 degrees. If beverages in plastic containers are exposed to the sun, this leads to changes in the taste and quality of the water, which can further cause serious health problems."
