Hikmet Hajiyev: Amending the Armenian Constitution is the last step toward a peace agreement
Azerbaijan expects only one final step - amendments to the Constitution of Armenia regarding territorial claims against Azerbaijan, after which a final peace agreement will become a reality.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Report, this was stated by the assistant to the president - head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan, Hikmet Hajiyev, at the CAMCA 2026 Regional Forum in Baku.
According to him, peace and security have been established in the South Caucasus, but it is important to ensure their sustainability.
He noted that the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, which had lasted for many years, was resolved, and Azerbaijan demonstrated strategic patience and leadership.
"We always said that we won the war, but it was important to do one more thing - to win the peace. This was indeed an extremely difficult task that required strategic thinking, patience, and the leadership of the president," the presidential assistant emphasized.
According to Hajiyev, peace now exists de facto in the region.
"As President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said, we live in conditions of peace and are even learning to live in conditions of peace. From the first days of our independence, we did not have sufficient peace on our land. But now we are working hard, and today peace exists de facto in the region. However, peace should not remain only on paper," he noted.
H. Hajiyev added that the corresponding amendments to the Constitution of Armenia are expected for the final conclusion of the peace agreement.
"We expect only one final step - amendments to the Constitution of Armenia regarding territorial claims against Azerbaijan. After that, I think, a final peace agreement will become a reality," he said.
