As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to the Holy See's press service, the cause of death of the 88-year-old pontiff was a massive stroke that led to coma and cardiac arrest. This is stated in the official medical report.
The document specifies that His Holiness Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio), born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires (Argentina), died on April 21, 2025, at 7:35 am in his apartment at the "Saint Martha" residence in Vatican City. The main causes of death were cerebral stroke, coma, and irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse. It is also reported that against the background of deteriorating condition, the pontiff experienced acute respiratory failure caused by bilateral multimicrobial pneumonia. In addition, doctors diagnosed multiple bronchiectasis and high blood pressure.
It is known that the pontiff also suffered from type 2 diabetes.
According to the Vatican spokesperson, Pope Francis's funeral may take place between Friday and Sunday. According to church canons, the burial should take place on the fourth to sixth day after death. The final date will be determined at the consistory, which the cardinals will convene on Tuesday to discuss all necessary procedures.
