He noted that local authorities and residents are participating in rescue operations, and teams from the central government and neighboring provinces are heading to the disaster zone.

Local officials note that this is one of the strongest earthquakes ever to occur in the country. In addition, at least two aftershocks have been recorded in the region, one with a magnitude of 5.2.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad at a depth of 8 kilometers, near the border with Pakistan.
