Strong earthquake in Afghanistan: more than 250 people became victims

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6 occurred in the Afghan eastern province of Kunar, resulting in more than 250 deaths according to preliminary data. This was reported to "Anadolu" by a representative of the Ministry of Information of Afghanistan.

According to him, the most affected areas are in Kunar province, roads are blocked due to landslides, and search and rescue operations are being conducted with the help of helicopters. Among the injured are more than 500 people, and it is expected that the death toll may rise.

The spokesman for the interim government of Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid, confirmed on the social network of the American company X that the earthquake has led to human casualties. "Unfortunately, today's earthquake has caused loss of life and property damage in the eastern provinces," he stated.

He noted that local authorities and residents are participating in rescue operations, and teams from the central government and neighboring provinces are heading to the disaster zone.

Local officials note that this is one of the strongest earthquakes ever to occur in the country. In addition, at least two aftershocks have been recorded in the region, one with a magnitude of 5.2.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad at a depth of 8 kilometers, near the border with Pakistan.
