In the USA, a 100-kilogram toilet made of 18-carat gold has been put up for auction
Auction house Sotheby's is going to put up for auction an unusual item - a fully functional toilet made of 18-karat gold, weighing more than 100 kilograms. Photos of the object are posted on the organizers' official page.
As BAKU.WS reports with reference to foreign media, the plumbing product called "America" was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan - the same author of the famous installation with a banana taped to a wall, sold in 2024 at Sotheby's auction for $6.2 million.
The gold toilet functions like a regular one, and its starting and final cost will depend on the price of gold at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Preliminary estimates value it at approximately $10 million. The bidding will start at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.
There are only two such toilets in existence. One of them was stolen in September 2019 from the palace where Winston Churchill was born. It was part of an art exhibition and was fully functional. Cattelan previously emphasized that regardless of the cost of food, the result is the same for everyone.
According to the New York Times, the current owner of the toilet up for sale is American billionaire Steven Cohen.
