In Kazakhstan, drivers have been allowed to choose license plates for cars themselves

In Kazakhstan, car owners will now be able to independently choose their license plates (GRNZ).

This is reported by the Kazinform news agency.

"In order to create favorable conditions for the population, regulations have been developed that allow for the free choice of license plates with any desired numeric and alphabetic designations, which came into effect on January 1, 2026," the agency notes.

The cost of license plates with any desired alphabetic and numeric designation will be 10 and 15 monthly calculation indices (MCI) (excluding high-demand plates, for which separate fees are provided).

The monthly calculation index is a coefficient established by Kazakhstan legislation used to calculate various amounts: benefits, taxes, fines, state duties and other payments; it is annually approved by the budget law and helps simplify the recalculation of hundreds of standards related to inflation. For example, from January 1, 2026, the MCI in Kazakhstan is 4,325 tenge ($8.52).
