Guterres: The situation in the Middle East has spiraled out of control

The situation in the Middle East is spiraling out of control due to the expanding conflict.

This was stated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the open debates of the UN Security Council on peaceful settlement.

"The situation is spiraling out of control and teetering on the brink of the unimaginable. The region is being drawn into a widening circle of confrontation. One crisis feeds another. One escalation provokes another," he said, speaking about the Middle Eastern conflict.

Guterres added that "it is time to step back," noting the absence of a military solution to the conflict.

As a reminder, the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for an immediate ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However, on the night of July 8, the US resumed large-scale strikes on Iran, accusing Tehran of violating the terms of the agreements reached regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
