Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz took the oath as Germany's new, 10th Chancellor in the Bundestag.

The ceremony was broadcast by Phoenix TV channel.

"I swear to devote my strength to the welfare of the German people, to increase its prosperity, to protect it from harm, to uphold and defend the Basic Law and the laws of the Federation, to conscientiously fulfill my duties and to do justice to everyone. So help me God," said Merz.

According to the DPA agency, the new Chancellor will hold the first meeting of his government on May 6.

Earlier on Tuesday, the German parliament elected Merz as Chancellor in the second round of voting. After that, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented him and the members of his Cabinet with appointment certificates.
