Former president of Peru arrested in bribery case

The court of Peru ordered the arrest for five months of the former president of the country, Martin Vizcarra, who is accused of receiving bribes during the implementation of irrigation projects and hospital construction. This was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office of Peru on social network X.
"The prosecutor obtained five months of preventive detention for Martin Alberto Vizcarra Cornejo, accused of passive bribery in the framework of the Lomas de Ilo projects and the expansion of the Moquegua regional hospital, when he held the position of chairman of the Moquegua regional government," the message says.
He was placed in a pre-trial detention center during the investigation, and the defense of the accused intends to appeal the decision.
According to the prosecution, the ex-president could have helped contractor companies obtain construction contracts in exchange for illegal payments amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars. In addition, the prosecutor's office claims that Vizcarra may have concealed campaign activities through fake business trip reports.
