Another country has been hit by a powerful earthquake
A powerful earthquake struck east of the coast of Japan's northeastern Tohoku region, according to an emergency government notification.
As reported by BAKU.WS citing TASS, seismologists estimated the earthquake's magnitude at 7.4. The estimate was later raised to 7.5.
The National Meteorological Agency reports that following the earthquake, tsunami waves reaching 70 cm in height struck the coast of the northeastern Japanese prefecture of Iwate.
A tsunami threat of up to three meters remains in effect for the northeastern prefectures of Miyagi, Iwate, Aomori, as well as the southern coast of Hokkaido Island. According to NHK television, tsunami waves were detected 5–20 km from the coast.
