Heat, smog, and even high humidity can trigger a worsening of condition in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), despite the fact that the disease is traditionally considered a "winter" illness. Pulmonologist Olga Tsagaraeva from AO "Medicina" (Academician Roitberg's clinic) told "Gazeta.Ru" about this.

COPD is a chronic disease in which the airways narrow and the alveoli — the tiny air sacs in the lungs responsible for gas exchange — are destroyed. Because of this, it becomes difficult for a person to exhale air, and shortness of breath, chronic cough, and rapid fatigue develop.

According to the specialist, most exacerbations do indeed occur during the cold season due to viral infections and exposure to frosty air. However, in summer, other risk factors arise. High temperature and humidity can intensify the feeling of air shortage, while air pollution, elevated ozone levels, and plant pollen can irritate the airways and impair breathing.

"Dehydration poses an additional danger. In the heat, sputum becomes thicker and harder to cough up, which also complicates the condition," the doctor warned.

Tsagaraeva emphasized that many people spend years attributing persistent cough and shortness of breath to age, smoking, or the consequences of past infections. Meanwhile, the disease continues to progress and increases the risk of respiratory failure and other severe complications.

The doctor urged not to postpone examination until autumn. According to her, the warm season can be used to stabilize the condition: quit smoking, increase physical activity, learn breathing techniques, and adjust treatment if necessary.

The specialist also recommended that patients with an already established diagnosis avoid overheating, maintain adequate fluid intake, monitor air quality, and strictly follow prescribed therapy. Regular check-ups and monitoring of lung function help reduce the risk of severe exacerbations and hospitalization regardless of the time of year.
