Scientists have created a weight loss product based on natural substances
Scientists from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have created a natural weight loss agent that prevents the absorption of dietary fats. The results of the study were published in the journal Pharmacological Research (PhRes).
Unlike other weight loss drugs on the market, the new compounds are modeled after natural substances. They are based on fatty acid esters of hydroxyl fatty acids, known as FAHFA. These are naturally occurring lipids that are found in small amounts in the human body and in food products.
It is known that naturally occurring FAHFAs have beneficial effects on metabolism, but their concentration is very low, and they are easily broken down in the digestive system, which limits their practical application. The team solved this problem by developing gastrointestinal-stable natural FAHFAs that retain their beneficial properties while being suitable for regular oral administration.
Scientists have already tested these compounds on animals. The new FAHFAs effectively reduced the absorption of fats - the main source of energy in the diet. According to the researchers, the body absorbs nine kcal from one gram of fat, which is approximately twice as much as from proteins and carbohydrates.
At the same time, the drug promoted the proliferation of beneficial gut bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids. These compounds improve metabolism, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the intestinal barrier.
"Combined with diet control and physical activity, this approach may provide additional support in the fight against excess weight and reduce the burden on the liver. We are currently working on assessing the safety and efficacy of the drug for humans," the scientists concluded.
