Washington and Beijing have agreed: Baku is pleased

In South Korea's Busan, on October 30, the first face-to-face talks were held between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump since the latter's return to the White House in January of this year.

"Excellent relations," "great, very friendly meeting" and "agreement on many important issues" - that's how Donald Trump characterized his almost two-hour talks in Busan. "Dialogue is better than confrontation," the Chinese leader agreed with him, summarizing the meeting. It should be noted that US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping last met in 2019.

End of the Trade War

Just recently, the trade war between the world's two leading economies threatened to provoke global economic turmoil, writes the newspaper "Caspian". Especially considering that the American side wanted to increase tariffs on Chinese goods. But after the negotiations, it became clear that tariffs would be reduced for China from 57% to 47%.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's hopes that Trump would begin to more firmly defend their interests, given the threat of Chinese invasion, did not materialize. In Kyiv, too, they were counting on Trump's promises to talk with Xi Jinping about ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, that is, they were expecting concrete results.

However, the head of the White House did not mention Taiwan at all, and regarding Ukrainian expectations, he stated that "sometimes you just need to let the parties fight."

As reported by the "Xinhua" agency, Xi Jinping stated at the meeting that China and the US can jointly achieve success and prosperity, and that having disagreements between them is normal, but the two countries should be partners and friends.

Following the talks, Trump said he could give the "amazing" negotiations "12 out of 10 points," and the announced one-year deal will be signed soon. Additionally, the US President intends to visit China in April 2026. As for the war in Ukraine, the parties will work together.

Results of the Meeting

Trump told journalists about the results of the meeting while already on the plane.

So, the US will immediately reduce tariffs on all Chinese goods in exchange for measures to stop the export of components of the drug fentanyl to the US. China, in turn, will resume imports of American soybeans and stop hindering the export of rare earth metals.

The main result of the talks, judging by the public statements of Donald Trump and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, consists of a partial abandonment of existing tariff restrictions and the achievement of preliminary agreements on the supply of Chinese rare earth metals to the US without enhanced export controls. In addition, according to a statement from China's Ministry of Commerce, the US agreed to maintain for a year the decision to suspend the "mirror" duty of 24%, reducing its overall level to 10%.

The overall tariff rate for China for the next year should be 20%, and in the opposite direction - the previous 10%. But Trump drew media attention to the overall weighted average tariff rate.
