The Baku-Ankara alliance left no chance for Paris's political show
French President Emmanuel Macron once again attempted to convey a large-scale geopolitical message through the South Caucasus. However, this time his plan fell apart at the border.
As reported by BAKU.WS, this is stated in video material by Baku TV.
As reported on the AzFront Telegram channel, French President Emmanuel Macron, who was in Yerevan from May 3-5 to participate in the EU-Armenia summit, planned to make a politically symbolic gesture by traveling from there to Turkey through the closed land border for a meeting with Erdogan.
Paris was thus attempting to demonstrate its influence in the region, but Ankara made a different decision. It is noted that the issue was discussed at a high level, and taking into account Azerbaijan's position, consent for Macron's plan was not given. This decision once again demonstrates the strong coordination between Baku and Ankara on strategic issues of the South Caucasus.
Meanwhile, in recent years Macron has faced a series of diplomatic setbacks — from the decline of French influence in Africa to the loss of positions in the Middle East and the lack of tangible results on the Ukraine issue. Now, the attempt to build a new political stage through Armenia has also proved unsuccessful.
As the authoritative French publication Le Journal du Dimanche writes, French diplomacy under Macron is rapidly losing its significance.
Against this backdrop, the statements of Turkey's special representative for normalization of relations with Armenia, Serdar Kılıç, also became a subject of discussion.
His words that "he feels at home in Yerevan" and his emphasis on taking Armenian interests into account during negotiations raised questions.
The balance in the region is extremely sensitive, and it is clear that Ankara is aware of this sensitivity.
Macron's inability to cross the border is not merely a matter of diplomatic protocol. It is also a signal of the new geopolitical reality: the South Caucasus is no longer a political backdrop for distant capitals. Decisions in the region are made in accordance with the balance of power that is being shaped here.
