Sabina Aliyeva called on Montenegro to ensure respect for the rights of detained Azerbaijanis
Ombudsman of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva sent a letter to her Montenegrin counterpart Siniša Bjaković regarding the detention of several citizens of Azerbaijan in Podgorica.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Report, in the appeal, the ombudsman asked to take personal control of the case and ensure that the rights of detained citizens are protected in accordance with the national legislation of Montenegro and international human rights obligations.
The ombudsman emphasized the importance of respecting the presumption of innocence, the right to legal assistance, and access to an interpreter.
She also drew attention to the need to prevent any manifestations of discrimination, hostile rhetoric, or intolerance on ethnic, national, or religious grounds.
Earlier, foreign media reported a conflict between a group of citizens of Azerbaijan and Turkey and local residents of Montenegro, after which several people were detained by the police.
