It has been one year since the historic Washington meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan, the United States, and Armenia

It marks one year since the historic meeting of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, President of the United States Donald Trump, and Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, held on August 8, 2025, in Washington.

Following the negotiations, the leaders of the three countries signed a Joint Declaration, which became one of the most important steps on the path to normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The document noted that Ilham Aliyev, Nikol Pashinyan, and Donald Trump witnessed the initialing by the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia of the agreed text of the "Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia." At the same time, the necessity of taking additional measures for the signing of the agreement and its final ratification was emphasized.

The meeting, held with the participation of U.S. President Donald Trump, is considered one of the most important steps on the path to normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The Joint Declaration reflected the parties' commitment to a peaceful agenda and their readiness to build relations based on the principles of international law. The document emphasized the inadmissibility of the use of force or the threat of force, as well as the importance of building the future of the region on the principles of cooperation and mutual respect.

One of the notable points of the declaration was the parties' intention to close the chapter of enmity generated by the past conflict.

The document also specifically emphasized the inadmissibility of revanchism and underscored that future relations would be built on peace and cooperation. This approach was regarded as an important political signal aimed at fostering an atmosphere of trust in the region.

The initialing of the text of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia marked significant progress in the years-long negotiation process and a stage in forming the legal basis for a future peace treaty.

Following the Washington meeting, the OSCE Minsk Group officially ceased its activities based on a joint appeal from Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Furthermore, after the initialing of the document, restrictions on the transit of goods through the territory of Azerbaijan to Armenia were lifted. In particular, Russian and Kazakh wheat began to be transported to Armenia through Azerbaijan. Simultaneously, Baku started supplying Armenia with petroleum products of its own production.

Another important outcome of the meeting was the acceleration of preparatory work on the TRIPP project — Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity. Technical and infrastructural preparations continued for the creation of a transport route that would connect the main territory of Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Azerbaijan also expanded the construction of road and railway infrastructure on its territory.

During the past period, an Azerbaijani delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev visited Armenia. In April 2026, the parties agreed on draft instructions defining the procedure for conducting the delimitation of the state border.

The document signed in Washington entered history as a political factor of strategic significance not only for the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia but also for the security of the entire region, its economic development, and prospects for international cooperation.

The international community also regards the Washington meeting as an important diplomatic step on the path to strengthening stability in the South Caucasus. According to experts, the document formed a significant legal and political basis for continuing direct dialogue, expanding transport communications and economic cooperation in the region, as well as signing a final peace agreement.
