Brotherhood in action: opening of the Azerbaijan Quarter in Kahramanmaraş

On June 19, the opening ceremony of the Azerbaijan Quarter took place in the Turkish city of Kahramanmaraş. The event was attended by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

On February 6, 2023, two terrible earthquakes with magnitudes of more than 7 points (7.7 and 7.6) occurred in southeastern Turkey. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Kahramanmaraş province. As a result of this disaster, which affected the provinces of Hatay, Osmaniye, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep, Kilis, Adana, Malatya, Elazığ, and Kahramanmaraş, 53,537 people died and 107,213 were injured.

The earthquakes, affecting an area of 120,000 square kilometers, caused massive destruction in 11 provinces, 124 districts, 6,929 villages and neighborhoods.

Rescue teams from 93 countries arrived to help with search and rescue operations. Azerbaijan was the first to respond to the tragedy of the brotherly nation, as our people perceived this tragedy as their own. "We are with you, Turkey!" said the people of Azerbaijan upon receiving news of the disaster in the brotherly country. From the first day, tens of thousands of Azerbaijanis came to humanitarian aid collection points in Baku and other cities of Azerbaijan to fulfill their brotherly duty, writes the newspaper "Caspian".

Immediately after the earthquake, search and rescue operations began under the leadership of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, followed by reconstruction and construction efforts.

As a result, in a short period of time, tens of thousands of people were provided with new apartments, which demonstrates Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's attachment and love for his people and his strong will.

"This is the embodiment of a strong Turkey, because only a strong state can carry out such large-scale construction and restoration work in such a short period of time," said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev during his speech at the opening ceremony of the Azerbaijani town, noting that our country immediately sent more than a thousand people to the earthquake zones in Turkey, including members of search and rescue groups, volunteers, and doctors. Azerbaijanis rescued 53 people from under the rubble. In two deployed field hospitals, our doctors provided medical assistance to 3,200 people.

The head of the Azerbaijani state emphasized that Azerbaijan and Turkey have always stood shoulder to shoulder since the first day of the Karabakh war. "The political and moral support, solidarity shown in the first hours of the war by the President and people of Turkey, multiplied our strength. We have restored historical justice, and today the Azerbaijani people live peacefully on their ancestral lands in conditions of security," he said.
