The 82nd session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will be held in Baku in April 2026.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Report, this was announced by the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Executive Secretary of ESCAP Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana at the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).

She expressed gratitude to the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev for this important initiative and support.

According to her, in a period of growing global challenges, the role of regional cooperation is more important than ever. "In this context, I would like to emphasize three main proposals for future discussions. First, it is important to create and strengthen regional platforms with the aim of enhancing policy coherence and coordination at national, subregional and regional levels. For example, the new ECO strategy can be aligned with national climate goals.

Second, given the impact of climate change on countries, it is necessary to create or improve a common risk assessment system, early warning systems and regional response coordination, especially regarding floods, droughts and glacier threats that have transboundary consequences.

Third, it is necessary to integrate the vision of a sustainable and climate-resilient future into all areas of cooperation, ensuring greater policy coherence and cross-sectoral synergy," added Alisjahbana.
