SOCAR Green announced the commissioning timeline for the first geothermal station in Azerbaijan

SOCAR Green company - a subsidiary of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) - plans to commission the first geothermal project in the country by 2030.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Report, this was stated by SOCAR Green solar and wind energy specialist Elchin Targuluyev during the event "Green Energy Week 2025: Azerbaijan and Central Asia" in Baku.
E. Targulayev noted that Socar Green is also working on non-variable sources - smaller but constant ones.
"For example, we are developing geothermal energy projects. Currently they are in the first phase - pilot projects that require serious state support, as their cost (LCOE) is higher than current grid prices. Together with the Ministry of Energy, we discuss weekly issues of support, risk reduction and costs. Our goal is to commission the first geothermal project in Azerbaijan by 2030," he said.
According to him, additionally, the company is developing bioenergy.
"There are already several projects: for example, a waste-to-energy plant of 37 megawatts, which, however, is not directly related to bioenergy, as well as a number of very small ones. But we want to implement a real bioenergy project - a power plant operating on multiple types of raw materials, combined in one place for heat and electricity generation. Most likely, such small projects will be implemented using the B2B (business-to-business) model, not through government procurement, as there are many local consumers," said E.Targulayev.
According to the specialist, the development of hybrid projects, which are more sustainable compared to single-source projects, will begin in the next five years.
"With proper management, they will provide stable generation, which is extremely important for the development of Azerbaijan's energy sector," he added.
