SOCAR and Canada's Gran Tierra Energy Begin Seismic Exploration Onshore Azerbaijan
The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), together with Canada's Gran Tierra Energy Inc., intends to carry out 2D seismic survey operations to detail the geological structure of the Guba-Caspian oil and gas region of the country.
According to SOCAR, the said operations are planned to be carried out under an exploration, development, and production sharing agreement for a prospective onshore block located in this region.
As noted, during the initial preparatory phase of the project implementation, a meeting was organized at the Executive Authority of the Guba district, during which the participants discussed the subsequent steps for bringing the project to fruition.
It is worth noting that in February 2026, SOCAR and Gran Tierra Energy signed the corresponding agreement. Under the terms of the contract, Gran Tierra Energy Inc., acting as the project operator, will receive a 65 percent participating interest. The exploration program envisages the collection of gravimetric data, the conduct of 3D seismic surveys, as well as the drilling of exploration wells aimed at assessing the hydrocarbon potential of the contract area.
