In France, a proposal was made to free Sarkozy
A representative of the French Prosecutor's Office proposed to transfer former President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is serving a 5-year prison sentence in the case of financing his election campaign, from prison to judicial supervision.
As reported by BAKU.WS, this was announced by the BFMTV channel.
According to their information, the prosecutor's office proposed to release him from prison on the condition that he would be prohibited from contacting participants in the case for which he was sentenced to imprisonment and the appeal for which will be considered in March 2026. The corresponding proposal was voiced at a hearing in the appellate court, which is considering the issue of release and changing the preventive measure for the 70-year-old politician.
Sarkozy is participating in the hearings via video link. If the court decides to change the preventive measure for the former president, he may be released immediately. The court is expected to make a decision at 16:30 Baku time.
The 70-year-old former President of France, who held this position from 2007 to 2012, was found guilty on September 25 of complicity in a criminal group in the case of Libyan financing of the election campaign, but acquitted on charges of concealing embezzlement of state funds and passive corruption. At the same time, the court did not establish the fact of illegal financing of the 2007 election campaign. Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison. On October 21, he began serving his sentence in a solitary cell at the Santé prison in the 14th district of Paris.
