Georgia's EU accession process suspended: new visa mechanism to be introduced
Georgia's EU accession process has effectively stopped since 2024, with the country being only a nominal candidate for membership in the community.
As BAKU.WS reports with reference to TASS, this is stated in the EU's annual enlargement report.
"The European Commission has concluded that Georgia's EU accession process has effectively stopped since 2024," the document states. "Following the European Council's decision of December 2024 and as a result of Georgia's regression, the European Commission considers Georgia only nominally a candidate country."
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated at a press conference in Brussels that the European Commission intends to implement a new visa mechanism in November to pressure Georgia to return to the path of EU integration.
