EU opens first stage of membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova
European Union countries have agreed to open the first cluster of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on joining the EU.
This was stated in a joint declaration by the President of the European Council António Costa and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
At the first intergovernmental conference, which will take place on Monday, June 15, the first of 6 main chapters will be opened – the fundamentals cluster, covering key EU principles and values, including the rule of law and democratic institutions.
Costa and von der Leyen stated that the decision reflects the efforts of both countries in implementing reforms despite serious challenges.
This will open up stability and economic opportunities for the countries, while for the EU, enlargement remains a strategic priority that contributes to strengthening security, peace, and prosperity on the continent, the statement says.
