Scientists made a disturbing statement about the Arctic

The area of sea ice in the Arctic in March 2025 reached a record low level in the last 47 years, since the beginning of satellite observations. This was reported by the European Climate Change Service Copernicus, reports Oxu.Az with reference to TASS.

According to specialists, in March the Arctic ice area was 6% below the average value for this month. This is the fourth consecutive month when a record reduction in ice cover in the region has been recorded.

"Usually in March, the sea ice area in the Arctic reaches its peak, but this year it was at the minimum level for almost half a century of observations," the Copernicus report notes.

Warmer than ever

Meteorologists also recorded temperature increases across the globe. The average air temperature at the Earth's surface in March 2025 was 14.06°C, which is:

  • 0.65°C higher than the average for the period from 1991 to 2020;

  • 1.6°C higher than in the pre-industrial era.

This makes March 2025 the second warmest March in the history of meteorological observations.

Europe "heated up" especially strongly

In Europe, March 2025 became the warmest in history. The average temperature was 6.03°C, which is 2.41°C above the norm for 1991-2020.

"Abnormally warm weather was recorded in Eastern Europe and in the southwest of Russia. At the same time, on the Iberian Peninsula, temperatures were, on the contrary, lower than usual," meteorologists reported.

Experts emphasize that such climatic anomalies indicate ongoing global warming and the need for urgent measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
