Craving for sweets explained by serious health problem
A strong craving for sweet, fatty, salty food, as well as dairy products, may indicate serious health problems, as reported by BAKU.WS, according to therapist and cardiologist of the medical company "SberHealth" Tatyana Simonova.
The specialist indicated that cravings for sweets can occur with unstable blood sugar levels, as well as in stressful situations, since glucose stimulates the production of the happiness hormone serotonin. The desire to eat salty food, according to the doctor, occurs during dehydration caused by diarrhea, as well as after active physical training, as they cause electrolyte imbalances. In addition, occasionally it may occur with adrenal insufficiency.
The therapist also called the craving for fatty and fried foods a sign of various disorders. In particular, such taste preferences can be explained by a deficiency of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, or K, or the development of gallstone disease. The doctor added that with a lack of calcium or tryptophan, one often wants dairy products. But the craving specifically for milk, according to the specialist, appears with increased stomach acidity.
The therapist emphasized that it is absolutely normal to want certain foods from time to time, but if the craving for a specific product occurs three to four times a week, then this is an alarming signal. Also, in her opinion, one should be wary if taste preferences suddenly change dramatically for no reason.
