Life expectancy in recent decades has been increasing more slowly, and medicine has approached the limits of its capabilities. Alexey Moskalev, Director of the Institute of Biology of Aging and Medicine of Healthy Longevity, told Life.ru about this.

"Modern medicine simply does not address aging as the cause of our life limits. But by acting on the mechanisms of aging, it's possible not only to slow down but also to reverse this process," noted Moskalev.

According to the scientist, over the past hundred years, human life expectancy has almost doubled thanks to improved nutrition, water quality, and the introduction of antibiotics. However, today these resources are exhausted - medicine only helps people live to 80-85 years but cannot radically extend youth.

"But to more radically increase the healthy period of life, we need to influence the causes of our aging and start doing this as early as possible. Because many aging processes begin in childhood. There are the so-called first thousand days of newborn development, and that's when the foundations that determine future chronic diseases are formed," he emphasized.

The scientist also spoke about future technologies that will allow humans to become "hereditary long-livers": each person's genome could be compared with the genome of an ideal long-liver, and identified genetic defects could be corrected using gene therapy.
