Russell's victory in Baku became one of the closest finishes in the history of Formula 1
The victory of British Mercedes driver George Russell at the 15th round of the current Formula 1 season — the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku — has entered the top 10 closest finishes in the history of racing.
This was reported by the press service of the racing series.
It is noted that the Briton beat second-place finisher Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) by a margin of 0.196 seconds, making it the closest finish in the championship since 2002.
Overall, Russell's victory in Baku ranked tenth on the list of the closest finishes in Formula 1 history.
In ninth place in this ranking is the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix. Winner Michael Schumacher beat second-place finisher Rubens Barrichello by just 0.182 seconds.
The record was set at the Italian Grand Prix in 1971. Back then, Peter Gethin beat Ronnie Peterson by 0.010 seconds.
