FIFA plans to change the penalty rule

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) may change the penalty kick rule.

According to the source, players taking penalty kicks may be prohibited from following up on the ball after it rebounds into the field or after a save by the goalkeeper. At the same time, the current concept of rule changes does not regulate what happens after the ball hits the goalpost.

It is noted that for this rule to come into force, it must be approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and then undergo practical testing.

In February 2022, FIFA and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) suspended the Russian national team and Russian clubs from tournaments under their auspices. As a result, clubs are not allowed to participate in the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, and the men's national team was deprived of the opportunity to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Russian footballers also did not play in the European Championship 2024 and were not admitted to the draw for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
