Weight loss medications: slimness at the cost of life?

A shocking case in Russia makes us think about the safety of weight loss products. A 17-year-old girl died from a stroke after taking weight loss medications.

This tragedy goes far beyond the grief of one family. Against the backdrop of growing popularity of pharmaceutical products for fighting excess weight, what happened becomes an alarming signal for the entire society. Most people who want to have a slimmer body choose weight loss medications rather than diet and exercise.

Nutritionist Leyla Zulfugarly noted that weight loss medications containing a substance called "sibutramine" pose a serious threat to life.

"The mechanism of action of such products is based on creating an artificial feeling of satiety. When appetite is suppressed, a person refuses to eat. This leads to weakening of the body's protective functions, decreased immunity, and serious disruptions in the functioning of internal organs," the specialist explained.
