EU welcomes the initialing of the Agreement on Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
This is stated in a joint statement by the President of the European Council António Costa and the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
It is emphasized that the signing of this document by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in the presence of the US President at the White House is an important event for both Armenia and Azerbaijan, paving the way for lasting, sustainable peace for both countries and throughout the region.
"Now it is important to ensure the timely implementation of the agreed steps to guarantee sustainable and continuous progress towards full normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Costa and von der Leyen were sincerely encouraged by the decisive steps taken by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia on the bilateral track over the past few years, including in the development of their previous series of discussions in Brussels.
The EU strongly supports the process of normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and is ready to invest in regional interconnectivity and full openness to benefit, first and foremost, the population, and bring the region closer to sustainable peace, stability and prosperity," the statement says.
Recall that earlier, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, US President Donald Trump, and Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan signed a Joint Declaration on the results of the meeting of the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington.
