The COP29 climate conference brought Azerbaijan to the center of global climate diplomacy, and the momentum created during the conference continues to develop.

This was stated by UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmytro Shlapachenko at a roundtable within the framework of the Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2026).

According to him, Azerbaijan demonstrated how climate leadership can create the necessary momentum for international cooperation.

He noted that the Baku Climate Action Week was a continuation of the efforts initiated within the framework of COP29 and the broader work to advance sustainable development and climate action.

"In Azerbaijan, we have seen how climate leadership can create momentum. COP29 brought the country to the center of global climate diplomacy, and this momentum continues thanks to the Baku Climate Action Week and broader efforts to advance sustainable development and climate action," Shlapachenko emphasized.

He also noted that today it is important to transform the created climate momentum into concrete and measurable results.

According to Shlapachenko, climate leadership must ultimately be assessed not only by the decisions made and promises given, but also by the actual reduction of emissions, strengthening of resilience, mobilization of financing, and protection of people and their livelihoods.
