Russia will pay compensation for the AZAL plane crash
In accordance with the agreements reached between the presidents of the Republic of Azerbaijan (RA) and the Russian Federation (RF) during their meeting in Dushanbe on October 9, 2025, the parties have reached a proper settlement of the consequences, including the issue of compensation payments in connection with the crash of the Embraer 190 aircraft belonging to CJSC Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) near the city of Aktau on December 25, 2024, as a result of the unintentional action of the air defense system in the airspace of the RF.
As reported by BAKU.WS, this is stated in a joint statement by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and Russia.
"The steps taken confirm the mutual commitment to further building mutually beneficial cooperation within the framework of allied interaction.
We express confidence that the progressive development of Azerbaijani-Russian ties based on mutual respect, trust, and consideration of the interests of both parties will continue to contribute to the strengthening of good-neighborly relations and the expansion of cooperation in the interests of the peoples of the two states.
We once again extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who perished in the aircraft crash and share the pain of the irreparable loss with all those affected by the tragedy," the statement reads.
As a reminder, on December 25, 2024, the AZAL Embraer 190 aircraft operating flight J2-8243 Baku – Grozny crashed 3 km from Aktau in Kazakhstan.
There were 67 people on board the aircraft (62 passengers, 5 crew members), including 42 citizens of Azerbaijan (37 passengers, 5 crew members), 16 from Russia, 6 from Kazakhstan, and 3 from Kyrgyzstan. As a result of the disaster, 38 people died and 29 survived.
On January 7, 2025, the opening of the aircraft's black boxes was completed in Brazil. The obtained data was sent to Kazakhstan. On February 4, 2025, the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan published a preliminary report on the crash investigation. The report presents a chronology of events and photographs of the damage.
