Restoration work continues on a historical monument of world significance in Nakhchivan

Yesterday, as part of a visit to Nakhchivan, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva reviewed the progress of restoration and conservation work being carried out at the Momine Khatun Mausoleum.

As reported by the Baku TV correspondent from Nakhchivan, the restoration of the monument is being conducted within the framework of the State Program for the Socio-Economic Development of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic for 2023-2027, signed by the President of Azerbaijan in 2023. Based on the results of studies conducted by local and foreign experts in 2023-2025, it was deemed necessary to carry out restoration and conservation of the mausoleum.

In this regard, in 2025, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on measures for the restoration and conservation of the Momine Khatun Mausoleum, which is a historical and architectural monument of world significance.

It is noted that the mausoleum was built in 1186 by architect Ajami Nakhchivani and was once part of a large architectural complex. Only this monument has survived to the present day from that historical complex.

Currently, work is underway to restore the mausoleum, reconstruct the roofing, measure and monitor the existing tilt of the structure, and create a drainage system.

The Momine Khatun Mausoleum was placed under state protection in 2001 as an architectural monument of world significance. In 1998, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
