Ilham Aliyev reviewed the restoration works at the Momine Khatun Mausoleum in Nakhchivan
On August 11, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva familiarized themselves with the restoration and conservation works being carried out at the Momine Khatun Mausoleum in the city of Nakhchivan.
As reported by AZERTAC, Director of the company Atelier Erich Pummer gmbh Erich Pummer informed the head of our state and the First Lady about the works being carried out at the mausoleum.
The "State Program for the Socio-Economic Development of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic for 2023-2027," approved by the Order of President Ilham Aliyev in 2023, provides for the assessment of the current condition of historical and architectural monuments of the autonomous republic and the carrying out of restoration and conservation works. The works being carried out at the Momine Khatun Mausoleum are also being implemented in accordance with this program.
As a result of surveys and studies conducted by local and foreign experts in 2023-2025, it was recognized as necessary to carry out restoration and conservation works at the mausoleum.
The head of state signed an Order in 2025 on measures for the restoration and conservation of the Momine Khatun Mausoleum, which is a historical and architectural monument of world significance.
This mausoleum, one of the magnificent monuments of Azerbaijani architecture, was erected in 1186 by the architect Ajami Nakhchivani. According to historical sources, the mausoleum was an integral part of the Atabeks Architectural Complex. Of the entire complex, only this monument has survived to this day. The total height of the mausoleum was 34 m. However, due to the subsequent destruction of 8 m of the outer cladding, its current height is approximately 26 m. The mausoleum consists of underground and above-ground sections.
Taking into account the architectural features and significance of the monument, a contract was concluded with an Austrian company with many years of experience in this field. An assessment of the current condition of the monument was carried out, as well as comprehensive research and measurement works. Currently, works are being carried out on the restoration of the monument, reconstruction of the roof, measurement and monitoring of the existing tilt of the mausoleum, as well as the creation of a drainage system.
The Momine Khatun Mausoleum was placed under state protection in 2001 as an architectural monument of world significance. And in 1998, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
It should be noted that the implementation of this project is of paramount importance in terms of preserving and promoting our historical heritage. The Momine Khatun Mausoleum, a magnificent monument of Azerbaijani national architecture and one of the gems of Eastern architecture, is our great historical and cultural treasure. This unique monumental monument, created by the outstanding Azerbaijani architect Ajami Nakhchivani, stands out for its compositional design. The mausoleum is also a vivid testament to the existence of a highly developed culture and traditions of statehood in Azerbaijan during that period.
