President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev participated in the opening of the 220/110/10-kilovolt "Yeni Sangachal" substation of "AzerEnergy" OJSC.

As reported by Azertaj, Chairman of the Open Joint-Stock Company "AzerEnergy" Balababa Rzayev informed the head of state about the substation.

It was noted that this large-scale green energy project envisages the integration into Azerbaijan's energy system of the 240 MW "Shafag" solar power plant being built in the Jabrayil district and the supply of electricity to the Sangachal Terminal through the country's unified energy system. The project was implemented within the framework of a cooperation agreement signed between "AzerEnergy" OJSC and bp company.

At the first stage, in May of this year, President Ilham Aliyev participated in the opening of a 330-kilovolt substation built by "AzerEnergy" in the Jabrayil district.

At the next stage of the project, the 220/110/10-kilovolt "Yeni Sangachal" substation was built to supply the Sangachal Terminal with renewable energy. This will make it possible to shut down the gas-fired power plant currently operating at the terminal. In the future, solar electricity produced in the Jabrayil district will be supplied to the Sangachal Terminal through the country's energy system.

As a result of the project implementation, the terminal's annual electricity demand of approximately 500 million kWh will be met through renewable energy, which will save 120-150 million cubic meters of natural gas annually, and carbon emissions will be reduced by 260-330 thousand tons.

The "Yeni Sangachal" substation, with a total area of 6.5 hectares, is connected to the country's energy system by four new 220-kilovolt power transmission lines with a total length of 111 km.

The substation's power supply is provided from three independent sources, including the "Janub" power plant with a capacity of 785 MW, the "Gobu" power plant with a capacity of 385 MW, and the 500-kilovolt "Absheron" substation.

At the same time, five 110-kilovolt overhead-cable lines with a total length of 25 km have been laid from here to the Sangachal Terminal. At the next stage, the installation of two more 110-kilovolt overhead-cable lines is planned.

The electricity supply to bp's Sangachal Terminal (80 MW) and the Shah Deniz Compressor Station (85 MW) will also be provided through this substation. Thus, the annual energy demand of both strategic facilities, exceeding 1 billion kWh, will be covered through the country's unified energy system.

It should be noted that advanced digital control panels and necessary equipment have been installed at the substation, its integration into the SCADA system has been ensured, and a Control Center has been built. The application of modern technologies and digital solutions has raised the reliability and resilience of the substation to a high level.
