Ilham Aliyev: Armenia will become a transit country for the first time in its independent history
In Azerbaijan, we have significantly invested the revenues obtained from the sale of fossil fuels in transport and logistics infrastructure.
This was stated by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the opening ceremony of the XIII Global Baku Forum on the topic "Bridging Divides in a Transitioning World."
"Today we are an indispensable partner with regard to the East-West and North-South corridors and actually the only country that is actively participating and investing in both projects - both the Middle Corridor and the North-West corridor.
And on the territory of Azerbaijan, construction projects for both corridors have been fully completed. What we are doing now is simply investing additional funds in order to expand the capacity of existing corridors, as demand for transit through Azerbaijan is growing.
We provide crucial transit for many countries located to the East and West of Azerbaijan. And now, after achieving peace with Armenia, we are closely cooperating on a new expansion of the Middle Corridor, which will pass through its territory. And Armenia, for the first time in its independent history, will also become a transit country, which it is not today. This will allow us to connect the two parts of Azerbaijan - the mainland and our exclave, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, through sustainable transport links, energy connections, fiber-optic communications, electric cables and, potentially, pipelines. So for us it is a kind of win-win situation, I mean for all of us," the head of state added.
