Hikmet Hajiyev: Azerbaijani-Mexican relations are based on the principles of friendship and mutual respect

Azerbaijani-Mexican relations are based on the principles of friendship, partnership, mutual understanding and respect.

As Report informs from the city of Shusha, this was stated by the Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan – Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev at a reception on the occasion of Mexico's Independence Day.

According to him, an important historical foundation for bilateral ties was laid by the visit of the President of Mexico to Baku in 1978 and the trip of the national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev to Mexico in 1982, when he was part of the USSR leadership.

Hajiyev noted that these historical contacts played an important role in the subsequent development of Azerbaijani-Mexican friendship.

He recalled that after Azerbaijan restored its state independence, Mexico became one of the first countries to recognize it. Currently, the embassies of the two states are fully operational in Baku and Mexico City, contributing to the further strengthening of bilateral relations.

"Today, very close and intensive political ties exist between Azerbaijan and Mexico, as well as a sustained political dialogue. The countries regularly hold political consultations and exchange views. The positions of Azerbaijan and Mexico coincide on most fundamental issues on the international agenda," Hajiyev said.

According to him, both countries support the development of interstate relations based on the principles of friendship and partnership, norms of international law and mutual respect, and also advocate for ensuring justice in international relations.

The presidential assistant particularly noted Mexico's consistent and firm position during the occupation of Azerbaijan's territories. Mexico City's support for the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty has always been highly valued by Azerbaijan and its people.

Hajiyev emphasized that mutual respect, commitment to international law, as well as support for territorial integrity and sovereignty constitute a solid foundation for the friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Mexico.
