Elnur Soltanov: The share of renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan will reach 34% by the end of 2027

Azerbaijan is among the most reliable partners in the system of maintaining energy security both on a European and global scale.

As Report informs, this was stated by Deputy Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan Elnur Soltanov during a panel discussion at the Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).

He reported that the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the overall structure of the country's installed generating capacity should grow to 34% by the end of 2027.

Currently, this figure stands at 21%. "The volume of energy production from renewable sources this year will increase almost twofold compared to last year's figures. The largest solar and wind power plants in the region are already operating on the territory of the republic. Despite its relatively small area and the scale of its economy, Azerbaijan strives to take a position of regional leader in the sphere of the 'green transition'," the deputy minister stated.

As E. Soltanov noted, the structure of greenhouse gas emissions in the republic generally coincides with global trends — approximately 70% of total emissions are generated by the energy sector, while industry, waste management, and the agricultural sector collectively account for around 30%.

He emphasized that the country's current energy balance is the result of a well-thought-out state policy: "The republic is witnessing an increase in natural gas production alongside a systematic reduction in oil production. Natural gas, when used rationally, is capable of becoming an effective mechanism for overcoming the global climate crisis. While oil is unlikely to fulfill such a function, gas certainly can. Throughout its history, Azerbaijan has held leading positions in the oil and gas revolutions, and currently serves as one of the key guarantors of energy stability for Europe and the world as a whole."
