Azerbaijan has been elected as a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for the period 2025-2029.

As reported by BAKU.WS, this was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.

According to the ministry, the decision was made during the 25th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in Paris.

Five countries, including Azerbaijan, competed for one seat allocated to the Eastern European region. Already in the first round of voting, Azerbaijan secured the support of 92 out of 160 states and was elected to the committee.

The World Heritage Committee consists of 21 states and is the main executive body overseeing the implementation of the UNESCO Convention. Its key tasks include forming the World Heritage List, recognizing objects of cultural and natural significance, preserving them, and passing them on to future generations.

Additionally, the committee determines the directions for using the World Heritage Fund resources and, at the request of countries, provides financial support for projects - from conservation work to preparing management plans, providing assistance in emergency situations, and strengthening institutional capacity.

It should be noted that Azerbaijan was already a member of the committee in 2015-2019 and made a significant contribution to its work. In July 2019, the country also hosted the 43rd session of the committee.
