Yusif Eyvazov performed on the main opera stage of the world at the La Scala theatre
Performing on the stage of Milan's La Scala is rightfully considered one of the most significant events in an opera artist's career - a moment that cements their name in the global music landscape. People's Artist of Azerbaijan, world-renowned tenor Yusif Eyvazov performed on the La Scala stage, singing the role of Calaf in the opera "Turandot" - one of the most challenging and prestigious tenor roles in the world repertoire.
As BAKU.WS reports, taking the stage at La Scala demands from an artist not only vocal mastery but also absolute stage precision, inner composure, and the ability to meet the highest traditions shaped over decades.
"This is the most important stage in the world - in Milan, at La Scala Theatre. It is incredibly prestigious and enormously responsible," the artist noted.
The Italian audience, raised on the traditions of bel canto, is known for its particular demanding nature and attention to every detail of the performance - from intonation to the dramatic interpretation of a role.
"The audience here is very demanding, and you need to please them. The art of bel canto was born here, and they take it very seriously. They scrutinize the notes, the phrases, the words, the high notes - the audience is very exacting," he emphasized.
The role of Calaf holds a special place in Yusif Eyvazov's repertoire and is rightfully considered one of his signature roles. The artist has performed it on the stages of the world's leading theatres, including the Metropolitan Opera, where he debuted in this role in 2015, as well as in London, Saint Petersburg, Berlin, and on the stage of the Arena di Verona.
The current production of "Turandot" at La Scala was directed by Davide Livermore and features a grand-scale scenic design and highly dynamic action. The stage space is in constant motion, and the complex choreography of the production demands not only vocal but also physical endurance from the artists.
At the conductor's podium is Nicola Luisotti. The production also features Ewa Płonka and Mariangela Sicilia.
"This is a very creative production, with a large number of stage arrangements: there are many people on stage, the sets are constantly moving. You literally have to run, jump, and at the same time maintain vocal precision - it's not an easy production," the artist shared.
Of particular importance, according to the tenor, is the caliber of stage partners - the very factor that creates a unified stage breathing.
"It is very important when you have true professionals by your side - we are connected to each other, we are doing a common work, and a great deal depends on this coordination."
The performance at La Scala in the role of Calaf became yet another important milestone in Yusif Eyvazov's international career, confirming his sustained presence on the world's leading opera stages.
